The retirement strategy that lets you stop saving — without stopping growing.
Coast FIRE is the point on your financial journey where the money you've already invested will, on its own, compound into a full retirement portfolio by your target retirement age. You still need to earn enough to cover today's bills, but you no longer need to actively save another dollar for retirement — the portfolio "coasts" the rest of the way on compound growth.
It differs from traditional FIRE (saving until your portfolio fully covers spending so you can stop work entirely) by separating two questions: how much do I need today so I can stop saving? and how much do I need to retire? The first answer is much smaller, and you reach it years — sometimes decades — sooner.
Who it suits: mid-career professionals tired of maximal frugality, parents wanting to downshift, and anyone considering lower-paying but more meaningful work. Limitations: you still depend on markets behaving roughly as history suggests, and a deep crash shortly after you stop contributing is the main risk.
Simple example. A 30-year-old with $130,000 invested, expecting a 6% real return and retiring at 65, would see that portfolio grow to roughly $1 million in today's dollars — enough to support $40,000/yr of spending at a 4% withdrawal rate. They've already hit Coast FIRE and can shift to a lower-stress career without losing their retirement.
